Your assistant is your front line of defense when it comes to protecting your day against unnecessary intrusions by others. Many times this is a skill that develops over time as the assistant learns the boss's preferences as to who gets in and who is politely told today doesn't look good. They are the ones who decide who's calls get through, and who's get shunted to voicemail. It is only commonsense that we provide our assistants with some guidelines to help them make the right decisions when faced with a caller who demands to talk to you.
